The Artist in Residency Kristiansand welcomes Anna Lehespalu
Anna Lehespalu (1983) is an Estonian visual artist. She was born in Tallinn, Estonia. She studied cinema at Baltic Film and Media School from 2012 to 2014, then at Escola Superior Artistica do Porto in 2015. She uses photography and video in her practice. Music has a significant influence on her work. She discovered photography and video as tools to visualise and document her emotions. Her process is intuitive and helps her to research and understand the human mind, particularly her own. The feelings we experience are more complex than the words we use to describe them. They are intimate internal processes we go through over the course of time.
Reflecting on her time with us so far she writes:
During my time in Kristiansand, I’ve been moving slowly and paying attention. I’ve spent this period looking at art, talking with artists, and learning about the ways people work here in Norway. This has made me ask many questions and experience new feelings, including both inspiration and a certain sense of being intimidated, and I can sense subtle changes in my own practice. Rather than rushing into producing new work, I’m allowing myself this reflective time to observe and listen, trusting that something new will emerge from it. It feels important to let things grow and evolve in their own time.
Alongside this, I’ve been spending time walking alone and with locals, letting the place reveal itself gradually. I hiked to a cave at Somsgruva during heavy snowfall, and yesterday I spent a long time withDraumkvedet (The Dream Ballad)by Torvald Moseid, learning about the work and its many details. It made a strong impression on me.
