Artist in Resident- Daniel Hygstedt Hansen

Daniel Hygstedt Hansen (b. 1991) is an Oslo-based visual artist whose work explores storytelling through novel technology. Since completing his MFA at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts in 2017, he has showcased his art in Norway and abroad, including at Kunstgarasjen, Fotogalleriet, Artothek & Bildersaal in München, and The Riga Photography Biennial. His new, and first, short film recently premiered at The Green Film Festival in Krakow. Daniel’s practice often uses techniques like infrared photography to explore narratives about the world around us.

Daniel is in Kristiansand to work on two upcoming exhibitions, where he’ll be using a special camera to make a series of large photographs and a short film. The camera mimics and old infrared film that was used in the Vietnam War to find houses and people in the dense jungle. In the images, everything that reflects infrared light looks vividly red, while most synthetic materials keep their original colors.

The works will look at stories relating to environmental issues and how new media often fall short of conveying these meaningfully. One example would be how the Ash tree is dying out in the Nordic region, where we once believe that the entire world existed around a giant ash. During his stay, you might find Daniel walking around in Baneheia or Bymarka to gather material and inspiration for his new works, or in the studio doing research and writing.
